If you have never bought a craft kit, the contents can be confusing. Here is exactly what should be in the box, and what a good kit does differently from a cheap one.
The short answer
A needlepoint kit is a complete package containing the printed or painted canvas, pre-sorted yarn, a tapestry needle, beginner instructions and any finishing materials the project needs. You supply only scissors. A good kit removes every decision except where to put the next stitch.
What is in the box
- Canvas - usually 13-mesh for beginners, meaning 13 threads per inch. Larger mesh is easier to see and easier to stitch.
- Yarn - wool, cotton or acrylic, pre-sorted by colour. Pre-sorting matters: it means you are not matching dye lots or guessing quantities.
- Needle - a tapestry needle with a blunt tip and a large eye. Blunt is correct: it passes between canvas threads instead of splitting them.
- Instructions - ideally with a diagram of the basic stitch, not just a chart.
- Finishing materials - if the project becomes an ornament: backing fabric, padding and cord for the edge.
Printed canvas vs counted chart
This is the single biggest difference between kits. A printed canvas has the design already on it, so you follow the colours. A counted chart requires you to count squares on a grid and translate them onto blank canvas.
Printed canvas is dramatically easier for beginners. Mistakes are visible immediately because the colour underneath tells you where you are. If you are new, choose printed.
What is usually not included
Scissors, a frame or stretcher bars, and a needle threader in cheaper kits. None of these are essential to start. Scissors are the only one you genuinely need on day one.
How to judge quality before buying
- Does the listing state the mesh count? Vague listings usually mean cheap canvas.
- Does it say how many yarn colours are included?
- Is the finished size stated?
- Is there a photo of the actual kit contents, not just the finished design?
What does a kit cost, and is it worth it?
Expect roughly the price of a paperback book for a single ornament kit.
